Myanmar announces pre-qualified applicants for telecom licenses

Myanmar has announced that 12 applicants have been pre-qualified to submit applications to compete for two telecommunications licences, the tender evaluation and selection committee announced on Thursday.

Advanced Info Service and True Group from Thailand were not among the companies.

The 12 applicants are Airtel Consortium, Axiata Group Berhad, Digicel, France Telecom-Orange + Marubeni, KDDI Corporation + Sumitomo Corporation + Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Development Corporation (MICTDC) + A1 Construction, Millicom International Cellular, MTN Consortium (MTN Dubai + M1 Telecom + Amara Communications), Qatar Telecom (Qtel) QSC (“Ooredoo”), Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) + KBZ + Myanmar Telephone (M-Tel), Telenor, Viettel Group and Vodafone + China Mobile.
More than 90 foreign companies and local partners expressed interest in the tender to operate telecommunication services in the newly open Myanmar market. Twenty-two were later placed on a short-list.

One of the selected pre-qualifiers, Telenor Mobile Communication, welcomed the decision in a statement Thursday, saying the company was committed to the long-term development of Myanmar’s telecommunications industry.
If Telenor is awarded a license, the company plans to leverage its experience from ownership in leading mobile operations in Thailand (dtac), Malaysia (DiGi), India (Uninor), Bangladesh (Grameenphone) and Pakistan (Telenor), in order to provide rapid delivery of a high-quality mobile network and services throughout Myanmar, the statement said.
The 12 will be required to submit their applications to the Committee by June 3, 2013, the committee said. The Committee expects to announce the two winners of the nationwide telecommunications licences by June 27.
