Plans to stop violence

The Lower House speaker met officials from the Islamic Religious Affairs Council in Yangon on Friday to take preventive measures against further violence in the country.

In the meeting, Speaker Thura Shwe Mann expressed sympathy over the recent sectarian violence, and vowed to take parliamentary measures to ensure the rule of law, peace and stability.
IRAC joint secretary Wunna Shwe said the meeting sought to discuss ways that MPs could help to prevent further violence.
“The speaker told us that Parliament would do as much as it could to prevent further violence in the country. He said he understood the sufferings of the conflict victims. He also promised to enact new laws for peace and stability if necessary.”
IRAC officials also called on Aung San Suu Kyi, chairwoman of the Parliament Rule of Law and Stability Committee, last month to discuss the prevention of further violence.
Wunna Shwe said: “They both (Shwe Mann and Suu Kyi) did not say what we have to do to contain the violence. They only said they would show their sympathy and would try their best to prevent further riots.”
