4 million cars clog roads

As the economy is growing, Myanmar now has nearly four million motor cars running on the roads throughout the country, according to official figures from the Department of Transport.

The department said it has officially registered 3,739,807 motor cars in the country. The majority of the vehicles are in Yangon, Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions, the department said.
The official classification includes vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, passenger buses, two-wheel vehicles, three-wheel vehicles and other machinery.
Passenger cars and buses are mostly registered in the commercial hub of Yangon, while motorcycles are mostly found in the second-biggest city of Mandalay, the department said.
Yangon accounted for about 10 per cent of all motorists registered in the whole country with nearly 400,000 registered vehicles.
The former capital faces increasing traffic congestion these days as the government’s new car replacement programme stimulates more vehicle imports into the country.
The recently formed Yangon City Public Transport Authority plans to introduce a law to tackle the traffic congestion in Yangon soon. And the Greater Yangon Strategic Development Plan, which has been partly funded in coordination with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, to be implemented jointly with the Yangon Region’s government, will construct rapid roads and express ways to relieve the congestion.
