Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi also emphasised that China would not interfere with the internal affairs of a country and that it was up to Myanmar to choose the appropriate way to develop. During Sunday’s meeting, deputy ministers of foreign affairs from both countries signed a strategic cooperation and implementation plan covering multiple sectors.
Yang arrived in Myanmar on a working visit on Sunday. He also met with Lower House Speaker Thura Shwe Mann, holding discussions on bilateral cooperation and Myanmar’s political and economic reforms.
Yang served as China’s Foreign Minister from 2007 to 2013 and was elected as Chinese State Councillor in March. He spent much of his professional life in the United States, where he served as Chinese ambassador from 2001 to 2005.
During his tenure as Ambassador to the US, Yang tried to ease tensions between the two countries that followed the 2001 mid-air collision between a US EP-3 spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet off the coast of Hainan Island in the South China Sea.
He is one of the most prominent architects of China’s foreign policy.
