Vientiane's embankment nearly complete

Construction of Vientiane's flood-prevention embankment along the Mekong River will be finished by December, state media reported Monday.

The 12-kilometre-long project, which began in 2009, needs another 2km of embankment to be finished, Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department director Dethsongkham Thammavong told the Vientiane Times.
The project was financed by a US$30-million (Bt937 million) low-interest loan from South Korea to the Laotian government.
The embankment aims to end the perennial floods in the capital when the Mekong River hits its highest level during the peak of the rainy season in July and August.
