Malaysia to review water charges to Singapore

The Johor state government in Malaysia plans to review its raw water charge to Singapore.

State public works executive committee chairman Hasni Mohammad said that following the review, the state government will leave the decision on whether or not to increase the charge to Singapore to the federal government.
“Based on the 1961 Malaysia-Singapore Agreement, the state government has been selling untreated water to Singapore at the rate of 0.03 ringgit (Bt$0.31) for every 1,000 gallons.
“However we have to buy back treated water from Singapore at the rate of 0.50 ringgit for every 1,000 gallons,” he said on Wednesday.
Hasni added that the state government will review the matter based on the agreement, and will submit a proposal to the federal government, who in turn will bring it up with the Singapore government.
“We hope that this matter will be resolved by the end of the year,” he said.
