Suu Kyi to open global conference for women MPs

Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will today deliver the opening speech for a two-day international conference on female political leadership that will bring women members of parliament from around the world to the capital Nay Pyi Taw.

German foundation Konrad Adernauer Stiftung (KAS) will host the two-day conference, titled “Women’s Leadership in Politics: Promoting women’s interests in parliament” and featuring discussion and debate on the vital role women have to play in democracy.
“This international dialogue will serve as a platform for legislators to share experiences of dynamics being played out in political parties and parliaments, electoral processes, affirmative action and hands-on political work,” said the KAS.
The MPs will discuss policy frameworks that enhance women’s political representation and participation, and translate into genuine benefits for women across societies and continents.
Women MPs from the national, regional and state parliaments of Myanmar will be joined by counterparts from Germany, Spain, Greece, Serbia, Kosovo and the European Parliament, and from Mongolia, South Korea, Indonesia, Cambodia, The Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan.
