Vietnam death toll hits 9 in wake of Wutip

Nine people have died and three are missing as central Vietnam continues to suffer heavy rains in the wake of Tropical Storm Wutip, authorities said yesterday.

The latest body recovered was that of a local government official whose car was swept away while he was delivering food to flood victims, the Central Committee for Storm and Flood Control said.
He died on Tuesday and his body was found a day later.
Heavy rains continued until Wednesday evening, with rainfall measured at 285 to 528 millimetres in different parts of the area.
Losses were estimated at US$232 million (Bt7.25 billion), the committee said.
Nearly 28,000 houses were swept away and 196,000 were flooded, while 120 fishing boats were capsized or sunk.
