Suu Kyi warns public not to fall into bombers' trap

Aung San Suu Kyi has called the bombing of several locations in Yangon and Mandalay a deliberate attempt to cause chaos and incite fear among the public. Speaking in her capacity as parliamentary chairperson of the Rule of Law, Peace and Stability Committ

“I know that people are worried about the bombs, because so many bombs have been found or have exploded recently,” she said on Tuesday. “But I believe that people will think this matter through with clear heads. These acts were instigated to cause unrest,” she said. “But we have to think clearly not to fall into the trap that leads to the wrong path. We have to pay special attention, but we need not be over worried. Now, it’s only natural to worry if we go to a crowded place, wondering if it will be safe. To be cautious is not wrong. But worrying too much is not good, either. We have to think from the middle, to avoid two extreme edges.”
When asked whether the bomb attacks in Myanmar’s largest cities might be one group’s attempt to change people’s minds about amending the national Constitution, she said, “That may be, but we cannot say for sure. It is the sole responsibility of the government authority to find out whose acts these are. Thinking too much with our imaginations can sometimes cause unsuitable consequences. Tension may arise.”
Member of the parliament Htay Oo, when asked which group he thought may be planting the bombs, said that only official investigations would determine whether these acts were staged locally or from abroad. “Think for yourself. Those who committed the bomb blasts must have been close to the ‘bomb environment’,” he said.
