NLD holding gathering over charter amendment

The National League for Democracy (NLD) was to hold a rally on amending the 2008 Constitution yesterday after lengthy negotiations with the police, who had earlier rejected the party's formal request to conduct the event, according to a member of the par

Win Htein, member of the NLD's central executive committee, told the Daily Eleven that the party has submitted for permission to the authorities to hold the rally at Latpankhar village in Zabuthiri Township from 8 am to 12 pm, but Police Major Nyi Win, the township's police chief, refused to grant permission for the event.
"We will continue [to hold the rally]. Now, we are still negotiating [with the authorities]. The reason they gave is absurd. They didn't want us to hold it near the Nay Pyi Taw Council office," said Win Htein.
In the letter of refusal sent to the NLD from Zabuthiri Township Police Station, the police said the letter of permission to hold a peaceful assembly did not have enough information.
Other reasons for the ban are for security reasons and to prevent traffic accidents as the event will be held along the Pyinmana-Taungnyo Road near the Nay Pyi Taw Council office, district administration office, government offices and the court on a weekday, according to the letter. However, the authorities will allow the NLD to hold the rally if they resubmit the letter of permission with enough information and change the venue.
