The number of vehicle thefts in Yangon have doubled over the past three years, police say, adding that crimes such as the theft of motorbikes, rape and road accidents have also been on the rise since last year.

Last year, as many as 48 cars had been stolen, up from 22 in 2011. The number of motorbike thefts rose to 52 last year from 39 in 2011; rapes rose to 152 last year from 145 in 2011; and road accidents jumped to 2,532 last year from 1,652 in 2011, according to official data. However, compared to 2011 figures, the region was free of other crimes such as kidnapping, treason and illegal possession of guns, though burglaries and armed robberies have been on the rise.
