Suu Kyi says she has 'never attacked' the military; stresses importance of 'defence perspective'

Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she has never attacked the military but only criticised the way it does certain things.

Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was speaking to a press conference held at Parliamentary Affairs Hall in the nation’s capital yesterday.
“I have never attacked the military. You know, some are not satisfied with me because I do not attack it. But I do not like some actions done by the military. I didn’t attack any person, either. I do not want my country to engage in such ‘attack’ politics. But I have to criticise the way they are doing certain things,” Suu Kyi, who is also a Lower House MP, said.
“When I held public meetings, some people indirectly said that I attacked the military with the intent to cause misunderstanding between the military and me. So, I explained that I did not quarrel with the military. The way the constitution is written has caused division between the people and the military. To solve this disagreement, the constitution must be amended. It is because the constitution is not fair,” the NLD leader said.
As to the presidential qualifications enshrined in the constitution, she pointed out the importance of a “national defence perspective” rather than an exclusively military perspective.
