Yangon low-cost housing projects to be ready in two years: ministry

The Ministry of Construction says it will complete its plan to build low-cost housing projects, comprising about 4,500 apartments in Hlinethaya and Dagon Myothit Seikkan townships in Yangon Region, in the next two years.

In Hlinethaya Township, a housing project in Htihlaingshin will feature 600 apartments while another in Kyansitmin will have 3,000 apartments. In Dagon Myothit Seikkkan Township, there will be 900 apartments in the Kyisuashay housing project.
With the intention of improving housing availability in Yangon Region, the ministry will continue carrying out the construction tasks for Ayeyawun and Yadana low-cost housing projects.
“In Myanmar, 18 million of the country’s 60 million people live in urban areas. Yangon is now facing a shelter shortage for about six million. With the population growth in Yangon, the housing requirement is of great importance in terms of upgrading living standards,” Yangon Chief Minister Myint Swe said earlier this month at a meeting on housing development.
Apartments from the Shwe Linban low-cost housing project, located in Hlaing Thayar Township in Yangon, will soon be sold at less than 12 million kyat (about Bt400,000) per unit, according to the Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development.
Soe Tint, the deputy minister for Construction, told the opening ceremony for the Construction and Housing Development Bank that some 35,000 units would be completed within the five years leading to 2015, in order to meet the high demand.
According to official statistics on residences in Myanmar, the total number of units created during the SLORC/SPDC administrations (1988-2010) was just over 10,000. During the current government’s administration, added the deputy minister, some 55,000 home units have been built.
