Thilawa land expected to be sold out by May

Land plots from the Thilawa Special Economic Zone will be sold out by May, according to the Thilawa SEZ Public Company. The company has already received 70 per cent of proposals for the setting up of businesses in the SEZ, which is due to open in 2015 out

“[The] project must be submitted. We had a bad experience before – plots were bought, kept and sold again at a higher price. Now a detailed project proposal must be submitted,” said Win Aung, chairperson of the Thilawa SEZ Public Company.
The price of land has not been announced yet, but it has been reduced to 30 per cent under the current the price of other industrial zones, he continued. Only the companies approved to do businesses will be allowed to lease plots for long-term periods. Proposals will also be taken into account for proper pollution and waste disposal.

No plan to ditch car-substitution programme
The head of office from the ministry of rail transportation has said that his ministry does not intend to cancel an old-age car substitution programme.
Win Naung told Eleven Media on March 31 that there was no plan to scrap the programme, after media reports saying the programme had run its course. “The ministry has no plan to ditch this system until the next financial year,” said Win Naung, adding: “it can be done only in the wealthy countries. Our country still has many old cars.”
This comes after the daily Voice quoted Union Minister Aung Min saying that the majority of old cars have been substituted and that the programme would be scrapped.
The minister was meeting with political parties at the Myanmar Peace Centre (MPC) at the time.
“The minister should not disclose such kind of words as it an important policy. This shows that the President’s Office has much more power than the ministries of rail transportation, commerce and finance,” said car broker Win Htut Thein.
