The Taninthayi coastline extends over 800 kilometres. Many of its islands are remote but beautiful, hence attracting investors in the hotel and tourism industry.
During the official conference held in Taninthayi Regional Hluttaw on March 31, a representative from the defence ministry questioned the merits of tourism in the region.
On behalf of the Minister of Development and Welfare, Win Aung, the minister of Social Affairs replied that authorities had already received the proposals for the construction of resorts from 16 companies.
Year after year, an increasing number of tourists arrive in Taninthayi through international airports and border gates HteeKhee, Maw Tawn and Kawthoung. In light of the rising number of tourists, services have been insufficient and this would require assistance from the government.
“The government’s support is vital to promote local tourism,” said Htein Win of Dawei Tourism. “For instance, there’s no local tour guide who has thorough knowledge about the major tourist attractions in Dawei, such as Shin Koe Shin pagoda.
“The lack of a local map also creates difficulty. If these problems are solved, there will be increased job opportunities for local people.
“Moreover, we should take the example of the Thai government, which supports the tourism industry so it can earn foreign revenue. If the required services can be offered, we can expect more international visitors.”
