The Truth Foundation was founded in 2009, and only three Koreans have been given the award.
This year, the honour will go to Win Tin and his foundation. The award presentation ceremony is to take place on June 6 in the capital of Seoul.
“They informed us on May 15. At first they intended to give this award only to late Win Tin before final the decision was made. Win Tin passed away on April 21 and so the Truth Foundation came to think of his foundation as well. They presented this award for the bravery and steadfastness of Win Tin,” said KyawAung.
Hanthawady Foundation has given assistance to political prisoners, former political prisoners and journalists since May 2012. The Foundation has provided for 63 political prisoners and 363 freed political inmates so far.
The Hanthawady Foundation has also given assistance on education, health and work for the families of political prisoners.
Win Tin was the co-founder of Myanmar’s pro-democracy opposition and the nation’s longest-serving political prisoner. He died on April 21 at the age of 84, after battling for decades to bring freedom to the formerly junta-run country.
He was a veteran Myanmar journalist and ally of Aung San Suu Kyi. He spent 19 years in prison because of his fight against military rule.
