Ital-Thai clarifies Dawei business

ONE of Thailand's largest construction firms, Italian-Thai Development, the developer of the Dawei Special Economic Zone, insists that it is not operating a tourism business in Dawei, saying that all visitors seen at the site are there for business not le

“The groups visiting the DSEZ Project through our company are all investors, developers, government officials, businessmen and others,” said Kanyakorn Dej-Udom, assistant vice-president of the corporate services division.
“They contacted our company because they were interested in visiting the project according to the company’s investment policy. Furthermore, the company’s site visits have been operating since 2010,” he explained.
Kanyakorn’s statement following complaints by some local business operators over a report in Eleven Media on May 12 saying the construction company operated a tourism business, through the use of vehicles to pick up tourists from Kanchanaburi in Thailand and the provision of accommodation inside the project site.
The company said that it provided accommodation for its corporate visitors and that it operated an exhibition centre Sala Pavilion and auditorium on the site.
“All the visitors come here to explore investment opportunities, not for leisure,” the company said.
It also said that the company provided a shuttle bus service should the visitors prefer to stay at a hotel in the city along with information about the city. Those staying at the site are required to pay some of their expenses. A tour to several places in the city is provided to show visitors the local flavour of the city.
It also insisted that no illegal vehicles were being used for this purpose. All vehicles are registered according to Myanmar’s law and the licences are renewed every year, saying it welcomed any investigation of its documentation.
“Optimistically, having investors or businessmen visit the project benefits Dawei as it is a good opportunity enabling investors to see and make decisions on business investment. This will obviously provide the most benefit for economic growth and development of Dawei,” the company said, adding that it stands ready to connect the investors with local merchants.
