Deputy Home Affairs Minister Brig-General Kyaw Zan Myint made the disclosure about the “rogue police” at a Mandalay Region legislative session.
“Anyone can complain or report to the ministry, the police forces headquarters or regional heads of police forces if policemen are linked to crimes relating to gambling, drug trafficking, KTVs and massage parlours. We took action against 113 policemen involved in 89 criminal cases in 2012. Similarly 166 officers and 62 policemen faced legal action in 2013. Furthermore, 39 commissioned officers and 27 non-commissioned officers are facing legal proceedings for 19 criminal cases, adding to the total of 433 COs and 212 NCOs as of June 26,” the deputy minister said.
Public cooperation is essential for apprehending policemen involved in criminal activities. Police would welcome the tips-off, said the deputy minister.
Some 84 suspects were arrested last year in connection with 25 KTV cases. As of June 26, 23 suspects were detained for 11 of the cases.
The deputy minister said that due to advanced communication technology, drug dealers often destroyed incriminating evidence when any stranger was detected entering their strongholds. This made it more difficult to carry out drug suppression.
