Elephants smuggled into Thailand

More than 60 elephants have been smuggled for tourism in Thailand between April 2011 and March 2013, according to a wildlife protection group, Elephant Family.

It reported that 4,000 to 5,000 elephants are left in Myanmar and such activities also threaten the survival of the Asian elephant. The smuggled elephants are sent to Thai-Myanmar border areas where they are trained and sold for use in the local tourism industry in Thailand.
Only 40,000 to 50,000 elephants remain in the whole of Asia, according to international watchdogs who say that the species may soon face extinction.
