Case dropped against British monk

Sayadaw U Ottara, the British monk, has escaped prosecution for religious violations, as the regional court endorsed his appeal.

According to defence lawyer Nay La, the regional court resolved that the authorities will not invoke Section 295 (a) against the monk.

“The regional court accepted the appeal and there will be no legal action related to this section in Tamwe Township Court,” said defence lawyer Nay La.

The other four monks - U Panyarsar, U Thondarathiri, U Nandiya and U Tayzeinda – are expected to follow U Ottara’s move in appealing against the case.

All were charged of religious violations in connection with a monastery property.

The charge was invoked under the direction of Mahana Phonegyis, government-backed monks of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, the ruling body for Buddhist monks.

On July 16, U Ottara’s counter charges failed to win the Bahan Township Court’s approval. He thus sought to seek the regional court’s approval.
