UN envoy visits conflict affected Mandalay

MANDALAY - Yanghee Lee, the new United Nations special envoy for human rights in Myanmar, visited conflict-affected areas in Mandalay on Wednesday, and met with regional officials and civic organisations.

The UN envoy visited areas in the ancient capital where riots occurred, mainly in Chanayethazan Township where two persons were killed and a Muslim cemetery was set on fire.

In the afternoon she held a closed-door meeting with regional government officials to discuss the recent violence. Lee also held a closed-door meeting with civic organisations and interfaith associations in Mandalay.

“Our committee will be cooperating with any organisations, including the government, to build peace and tranquility. The UN also pledged to cooperate with us and we will submit our reports and their findings to the Myanmar government as well as to the UN,” said Advocate Thein Than Oo from Mandalay’s Peace and Tranquility Controlling Committee.

Lee proceeded to Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday evening. This is her first official visit to Myanmar.
