Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General Vijay Nambiar and China’s special envoy on Asian Affairs Tand Ying attended the summit organised by the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team to discuss a nationwide ceasefire agreement with the government.
“The government and armed ethnic groups will have to negotiate the ceasefire deal, but the UN will provide any assistance if required,” said Vijay Nambiar.
He added that the meeting was very important for continuing the ceasefire negotiations, and that as long as Myanmar continues to support peace talks the UN will give any support needed.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also sent a personal message to the summit, saying that the UN was closely monitoring Myanmar’s peace process and that this moment should be noted as a very important political turning point for the country.
He also commended Myanmar for reaching this stage after suffering more than 60 years of armed conflict and said he believes that peace is the best result for the future of the country and its people.
Tand Ying said that social stability was essential for economic development and that China would be able to strengthen economic ties with Myanmar once there is a speedy reconciliation between the government and ethnic groups.
“We will give any assistance we can for the ceasefire deal and peace process if required,” he said.
The NCCT invited the UN advisor and China’s special envoy as international observers.
