Signature campaign wins nearly 5m signatures

The National League for Democracy's campaign has collected nearly 5 million signatures from 301 townships across the country.

"We have already counted around 4.9 million signatures from 301 townships for the petition. The signatures have been counted till today," said Tun Tun Hein from NLD on Aug 4.
The figure is expected to be higher today when the final result will be announced.
The 54-day campaign lasted from May 27 to July 19. It was designed to raise political awareness and show the public support for amending the 2008 Constitution. The campaign was launched in the townships in states such Kayin, Shan, Chin and Mon, and regions such as Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Magway and Sagaing.
The campaign was co-organised by NLD and the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society.
NLD and the Generation 88 members have held forums across the country to explain the necessity of amending a charter that leaves the military in control of the country. They have also distributed pamphlets that clearly explain the need to amend Section 436.
The campaign also attracted support from other political groups as well as artists, poets and organisations that assist the disabled.
NLD and allied ethnic parties announced jointly on July 7 that the 2008 Constitution should be amended as it cannot realize the domestic peace, establishment of the union nation and equal rights for ethnic people.
