President warns against "extremism"

Nay Pyi Taw - President Thein Sein today called for action against "extremism", echoing international calls for the end of sectarian violence in the country.

In his address to mark the opening of the 47th Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM), he urged a "peace-loving majority" to stand up against violence.
US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to reinforce that message when he attends Sunday's Asean Regional Forum (ARF). He is also expected to press Myanmar to reinforce its commitment to democratic reforms as the former pariah state heads towards landmark elections next year.
Myanmar has been criticised by rights groups for not doing enough to stop anti-Muslim unrest.
The country, which began emerging from outright military rule in 2011, has been accused of backsliding on reforms in recent months, with journalists and activists arrested, while religious violence and the rise of Buddhist nationalism has also sparked concern.
