MP calls for development and peace to be pursued in tandem

Development projects should not be postponed until peace is achieved in regions where the Union army continues its conflict with armed ethnic group, MP Bo Yei told Parliament on October 14, saying that peace and development should be implemented in tandem

The Kayin State MP submitted a proposal urging the Union government to accelerate development projects in ethnic states where conflict is ongoing.
He said Myanmar was under developed due to its numerous armed conflicts, noting that it had been ranked as one of the least developed countries in the world for decades. “Ethnic regions are suffering the most. They face underdevelopment in every corner, from security to roads,” the MP from the military-backed Union Development and Solidarity Party said.
People living in ethnic areas where the Tatmadaw is engaged in conflict with ethnic armies have had to restart their lives repeatedly as they have had to flee their villages when conflict erupts. Some are physically disabled or suffering psychological trauma due to the conflicts, he added.
He praised the government for its development efforts, which has seen roads and access to electricity expanded.
“There should be long and short-term development projects for regions that are less development due to conflict and development plans should be drafted for them,” he said.
Specifically, he called for the introduction of more modern agricultural techniques.
Development projects should not be postponed until peace is achieved, he added.  “Now is the time to heal the mental trauma caused by conflict,” he said.
Road construction, access to electricity, irrigation, clinics, schools and de-mining is needed in conflict zones, he said.
