“By 2015, about 5,000 students and citizens are expected to get hand hygiene-related knowledge. We will try to educate more than 20 million citizens about the importance of washing their hands by 2020. Since the awareness programme started, the percentage of people washing their hands has increased to 20 per cent, up sharply from nine per cent before the programme,” a person from Unilever Myanmar said.
The awareness activity is accomplished by education with entertainment, which includes making the students participate in the activity, asking them to write a diary about how they and their family follow the activity at home, and rewarding those who follow the instructions.
Washing one’s hands with soap can prevent diarrhoea in 45 per cent cases and pneumonia in 23 per cent.
