First VoD service set for launch next year

The country's first official video-on-demand (VoD) service will be launched early next year, according to Myanmar Film Development.

The new online TV service provides digital entertainment content including full-length films, soap operas and direct-to-home videos.
Myanmar Film Development and Bagan Investment have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the VoD service and will sign a contract within this month.
"We are preparing to sign a mutual contract with Bagan Investment," said filmmaker Maung Maung Oo (Snow White) of Myanmar Film Development. "Terms and conditions will be included in the contract. Each side will look at the draft and consult with their lawyers. Then, we will sign the contract."
"As we can only start our work after signing the contract, these projects can only be carried out in early 2015. This may be a new avenue for the Myanmar film industry if [the VDO service] is launched," he added.
The VoD service will be offered through an online payment or a prepaid card system. An app will also be launched to make the VoD service available on smart phones and other mobile devices.
Currently overseas Myanmar movie fans pursue pirated content due to the lack of proper regulation and distribution.
