City secretary Saefullah said that renting cars would be much cheaper and simpler than buying cars. “For instance, if there are any problems, we can return them to the agent and they could give us a new one. We do not need to spend any money fixing the cars,” Saefullah told reporters at his City Hall office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.
He further suggested that all rented cars should be Toyota Kijang Innovas, which are not too expensive and relatively easy to maintain.
Jakarta acting governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama supported the plan, adding that the existing official cars would be sold in an auction. The money from the auction would be returned to the city administration’s budget. “If our officials don’t want the cars, then we will offer them a sum equivalent to the cost of renting a car,” Ahok said.
