Military MPs refuse to amend Constitution

Military MPs have agreed not to amend Section 436 and Section 59 (F) during the discussions in Union Assembly on November 13.

According to Brig-Gen Tint San Naing, the military MPs discussed the issue and decided not to amend Section 59 (F) with 21 committee members out of 31 voting against the amendment. Five committee members instead proposed to amend some wordings in the section. If the two sections of the 2008 Constitution are to be amended, it must follow chapter 12 of the Constitution.
Another military MP Brig-Gen Khin Maung Aye said some wordings included in the Section 436 should be amended. He added that sections concerning the military are still suitable for the current conditions.
Another military MP Brig-Gen Maung Maung called for the amendment of 201 sections out of 457 sections contained in the Constitution. It is only four years that we’ve been using the 2008 Constitution. We need to carefully analyse before amending the Constitution.”
Brig-Gen Maung Maung said, “If the Constitution is amended frequently and easily, State’s policies will not be strong and will lead to confusion in the country’s development and state’s interests. So, Section 436 (A) and (B) should not be amended.”
Although the parliament is in discussion for the Constitutional amendment, it would be useless unless the military MPs agreed to some changes.
