Internet speed to improve next year

Internet speed in Myanmar is expected to improve in 2015 with the extension of the SEA-ME-WE 3 underwater fibre cable by Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT), a representative of the state-owned telecom operator said.

The extension process has been under way since the beginning of December and is expected to be completed in January next year, the representative said.
"The expansion will increase the speed up to 40 Gpbs from current 10 Gpbs. It's the widest expansion to date. We will work together with foreign companies. Faster internet services will be available in January. The internet speed will be better," said an official from MPT.
MPT said this is the fifth extension of the SEA-ME-WE 3 fibre cable. He added that MPT is now conducting surveys to employ the SEA-ME-WE 5 in 2016.
There are several internet service providers in Myanmar, including Fortune International, Elite, Yatanarpon Teleport and Redlink, but they are all required to purchase internet access from MPT.
MPT announced the launch of new products and services after an agreement with Japanese telecommunication giants KDDI and Sumitomo in September.
