Army chief visits Myanmar to seek border cooperation

Army Chief Gen Udomdej Sitabutr is visiting Myanmar to meet the country's supreme commander and army chief in order to seek cooperation on border affairs and boost military relations.

The Thai army chief said the trip was aimed at boosting military relations, order along the Thai-Myanmar border, and narcotics suppression in border areas as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon emphasized.

Gen Udomdej also said he would push for development of Thai and Myanmar villages along the border in a bid to tackle the illicit drug trade and proceed with the reforestation project along the Thai-Myanmar border that Gen Prayut had initiated when he was army chief.
"With good relations, problems can be solved quickly without any tension. Things have been smooth and we will make them smoother," the army chief said. He will return to Bangkok tomorrow.
