“We have yet to know whether the Spanish tourist is missing or has fled after arriving at the Yangon hospital. We are investigating this in cooperation with authorities concerned. As we don’t have the Spanish embassy here (in Myanmar), we are trying to contact him via the consulates,” Police Lt-Colonel Win Kyi from the Yangon West District Police Force said on Thursday.
The 31-year-old man, known as Carlos, was attacked by two unknown men while on a bike ride at Mile Post No.43/1 on the old Yangon-Mandalay Highway at the exit of Bago Region at about 10 pm on Monday.
He was taken to a field and attacked by unknown men using an iron rod and a sword. His backpack, money and bike were reportedly stolen by the attackers.
The Spanish tourist who sustained 13 slash wounds was sent to Bago People’s Hospital and later transferred to Yangon General Hospital.
Bago Police Station No.3 has opened a case under Article 394 of Penal Code of Myanmar.
