A protester gets three-month jail term

A protester from Kathar Township, Sagaing Region, was sentenced to three months in prison for a protest that took place in the township early last year.

The sentence for Thidar Myint was announced on March 31, after a year-long legal battle that involves more than 30 court hearings. She was charged with violating Section 18 of the penal code that bars protest without permission.
Her lawyer said the court decision was unfair, as she was one of about 300 people participating in the protest which was led by Buddhist monks.
The protest followed the 6-month jail term for a Buddhist monk charged with having an affair with a woman. Monks were enraged as the punishment was handed down by a court, not by the clergy.
