Govt agencies in dispute over land ownership

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) and the Myanmar Port Authority (MPA) are locked in a dispute over the land ownership of Seikkanthar Park which is included in the Asia World Project, sources say.

The 1.5-acre park is located in Kyimyindine Township.

Representatives of Asia World, officials from the western district development committee and the MPA met on March 31 to resolve the dispute.

“The government transferred the park to us since 1996. We have documents to prove. Asia World made some renovation work at the park in 2011-2012. But the park is publicly owned property. People ask us to renovate the park for recreation. We will upgrade the park for recreation activities,” said Khin Hlaing, No 7 committee member of the western district development committee.

Although YCDC sent a notice letter three times and held talks with Asia World Company, it failed to end the dispute. The MPA posted a warning on a vinyl not to trespass into its land.

“We have come to take measurement of the park. We will submit it to the higher authorities and we will follow their instructions. We put up a fence around the park for almost ten years now,” said Kyaw Zin Oo, deputy manager of MPA.

“It is not concerned with us. We are a third party organisation. We will follow the instructions from the authority,” said Myat Kyaw, manager of the Asia World.
