Kachin hydro projects still in plan

The Kachin State Hluttaw on April 2 meeting declined to rule on the future of hydropower projects planned to be constructed in the state.

The council’s chairman refused to answer the question of In Pha yaung Gan, a representative of the Hpakant Township: when is the final date for the termination of the Confluence Region Hydropower Projects. The chairman said that the issue has to be discussed at the Union Parliament, not at state level.
Kachin State Chief Minister La John Ngan Sai, when asked the same question by a journalist at the Myitkyina City Hall, said that as the government is elected by the people, the wishes of the people are the top priority.
President Thein Sein suspended the hydropower projects on September 30, 2011.
The Confluence Region Hydropower Projects located at Myitsone, Chibwe, Pashe, Lakin, Phizaw, Khaunglanphu and Laiza, are equipped to produce up to 20,000 megawatts.
