Tax crackdown leads to Ks430 million in seizures

The Internal Revenue Department has reported that more than Ks430 million worth of untaxed items were confiscated during April.

Increased monitoring and controls were implemented at Yangon International Airport, the city’s ports and in other regions last month.
During April there were 61 incidents of smuggling with five cases at the airport while the ports had three seizures which resulted in Ks900,000 and Ks1 million worth of goods confiscated, respectively. A total of 53 cases were reported outside Yangon with timber smuggling accounting for Ks1.02 million of confiscations.
The department said that during the 2014-15 financial year, Ks4.5 billion worth of goods were confiscated compared to more than Ks6 billion in 2013-14.
It says it is aiming to impose tighter restrictions to prevent smuggled goods entering the country through mobile teams and cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce.
