Only 19.8% back Yangon's waste policy

Only 19.8 per cent of respondents in a recent survey voted in favour of the waste-collection privatisation, said Mayor Hla Myint.

He insisted that the privatisation would take place only when people accepted it.
About 80.2 per cent of the population of Yangon were asked whether they supported the scheme. Seven companies submitted bids and Zeya & Associates Co and TYTC Services Co won the tender.
The companies say they will charge Ks1,600 per month in downtown instead of the Ks600 currently paid to the Yangon City Development Committee. Properties adjacent to the centre would apparently pay Ks1,400 instead of Ks450 and the suburbs would pay Ks1,200 instead of Ks300.
U Kyaw, a resident from Thingangyun Township, said: “I hardly see the garbage truck coming to my ward. I totally disagree over the handover of the garbage collection to private companies and increased fees. I voted ‘no’.”
Khin Hlaing Zawtika, a member of the YCDC, also expressed opposition to the handover.
