He shares the information during the ‘1,000 Days’ nutrition video press event on June 16 at the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
“When we looked at the malnourished kids, we found them to be from impoverished families. Half of Myanmar’s population is poor. That’s why we can say that 1 in 2 children are suffering from malnutrition,” he said.
LIFT, a multi-donor organisation, first entered Myanmar in 2009 and has worked towards reducing poverty, providing sufficient rations and vocational training and has helped over 2.8 million people in Myanmar so far.
“In the fight against malnutrition, we have to make sure that within the first 1,000 days, the children receives sufficient amount of nutrition otherwise the children’s future growth and development will be limited. The Health Ministry is also providing financial support to pregnant mothers as part of our process to against malnutrition,” said Dowall.
Myanmar’s efforts in the ‘Scaling Up Nutrition’ movement are hindered by the public’s lack of knowledge, difficulties in accessing nutritious foods, lack of practices that promotes good nutrition as well as insufficient amount of data collected.
