Kyaw Than who participated in the demonstration said: “We call for the setup of a hospital in Kyauktan region to offer health care services to local people. Our region, which is located in a very remote area, has a population of 4,000 but has no hospital. So we staged this demonstration.”
Kyauktan village, located about 20 miles from the centre of Yathaedaung Township, has a rural health care centre. But this centre cannot provide proper health care to over 4,000 people there. This demonstration was staged in accordance with the protest permit from the authority.
Maung Thaung Shwe, a local from Kyauktan village said: “Yathaedaung Township is the least developed region in Rakhine State and also Kyauktan village in Yathaedaung Township. We have already written a letter to the state chief minister, asking him to open a hospital for the region. Parliamentarians are turning a blind eye to our demands as well. It takes more than four hours to transport emergency patients to Yathaedaung from our village.”
