Farmer's Union chairperson to receive legal assistance in trespassing case

The Myanmar Farmer's Union (MFU) and the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society will provide legal assistance to Su Su Nwe, chairperson of the MFU, who was charged with trespassing on military-held land.

Lawyers from the legal departments of the two organisations plan to help with her trial.
About three months ago, the military filed a lawsuit against Su Su Nwe under Section 447 of the Penal Code of Myanmar after she helped local famers protest military land-grabbing of their lands. She is set to appear in the Bago Township court in Bago Region on July 29.
Su Su Nwe was accused of trespassing on military-held land in Indagaw, Bago Region. She reportedly visited the land after more than 8,000 acres of land owned by local farmers were seized by the military.
She is currently being detained in Bago Prison. Her husband Kyaw Kyaw Htwe said she would face trial without seeking bail because she is not guilty.
