Suu Kyi highlights unity

Demoso - National League for Democracy (NLD) chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi highlighted unity in her election campaign in Kayah State.

Suu Kyi visited Loikaw before reaching Demoso and Hpruso.
She said Myanmar had many ethnic groups and different cultures, religions and languages making it important to build mutual trust to establish peace.
“Some are concerned about inequality. Actually they don’t need to be concerned about that. We don’t view the inequalities between ethnic groups as a weakness. We need unity to continue to develop our country. The NLD set a principle to establish a genuine democratic, federal state since the party was founded in 1988,” said Suu Kyi.
She said people wanted democracy and demonstrated that in the cancelled 1990 election. Everyone needed to understand the November 8 election was vital for the future of Myanmar.
“We can only change the political system if we form a government.”
Bawlakhe, Hpasawng and Shadaw townships are on the itinerary with the police promising tight security.
Nine parties are competing for Kayah State’s 172,000 votes. President’s Office ministers Aung Min and Soe Thein are running as independents in the state.
Aung Min will compete in Shadaw and Soe Thein will run in Bawlakhe.
Sources say there are more than 80,000 voters in Loikaw, more than 48,000 voters in Demoso, 17,000 in Hpruso, more than 3,900 in Shadaw, more than 6,000 in Bawlakhe, more than 10,000 in Hpasawng and more than 3,600 in Mese.
More than 60,000 of the Kayah voters are soldiers and police officers stationed in the state or their families.
