NLD to change charter and bring peace in one move

Win Htein, spokesperson for the National League for Democracy (NLD), says peace and charter change would be priorities in government, while a greater role would be offered to ethnic representatives .

“The NLD will continue working for a nationwide ceasefire agreement. We are meeting to seek ways to establish peace because Aung San Suu Kyi is unable to meet the ethnic representatives at the moment,” Win Htein said.
“We still stick to the principle of political solutions to ethnic issues laid down on February 12 in 1989. We insisted on establishing a federal democracy even at a time when other people dared not say it. After forming a government, we will carry out peace and constitutional amendments at the same time. The constitution will lead to a federal democratic union and peace. In this state, the minority ethnic groups will enjoy more advantages,” Win Htein said.
He said the NLD would demand a greater representation at the peace talks. As the NLD had won 80 per cent of the vote, it was natural it should get more influence than parties that failed to win a single seat, Win Htein said.
He said some groups were working as a barrier to the peace process.
A meeting between the NLD and ethnic signatories was held in Yangon on November 26.
