Ex-presidents given immunity

Yangon - The Union Parliament has approved the presidential security bill which says no legal action can be taken against an ex-president.

Although MP Phae Than submitted a proposal to leave out the clause “no legal action or penalty can be made against a retired president for activities in the line of duty”, the Parliament approved it by adding the words “in line with the law”.
Deputy Speaker Nanda Kyaw Swar asked for objections and only Phae Than opposed the bill.
Phae Than said anyone who committed a crime or was corrupt should face legal action.
MP Sandar Min wanted to remove the clause “to protect a president and their family from any life-threatening dangers or physical harm after retirement for decisions made while in office”, the Parliament chose to include the phrase.
The bill also appointed “eternal” bodyguards for former presidents.
