Political prisoner goes on hunger strike

Yangon - Naw Ohn Hla, who was sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour, has begun a hunger strike at Insein Prison against the bill on the security of ex-presidents.

She was sentenced for attending a protest demanding an investigation into the death of Khin Win, who was killed during clashes between farmers and security forces at the Letpadaungtaung copper mine, Sagaing Region, on December 22, 2014.

“She condemns the bill on the security of ex-presidents. She is going on hunger strike at Insein Prison from January 5,” said her son Min Nay Htoo.

Despite vocal criticism of the presidential security bill, Parliament approved it on December 31, ensuring no legal action can be taken against an ex-president.

On May 15 last year, Naw Ohn Hla protested in front of the Chinese embassy to demand an investigation into the killing of Khin Win.
