Myanmar's bid to expand garment industry

Myanmar's bid to expand garment industry

YANGON - Myanmar is stepping up efforts to boost the garment industry, with a plan to standardise the benefits of manufacturers and labourers.

Under this move, the Management Committee for Cutting-Manufacturing-Packing (CMP) would form at least four sub-committees to oversee wages, taxation scrutiny, import management and advisory, respectively. Meanwhile, it would also help screen business plans which will be submitted for the Myanmar Investment Commission's approval.
The vast majority of Myanmar's garment factories operate under the Cut-Make-Pack system. Foreign manufacturers are lured to Myanmar due to low minimum wage at 3,600 kyats a day. However, workers have voiced complaints over hard work conditions.
