Obama expresses heartfelt condolences over Thai King’s passing

US President Barack Obama offered his “heartfelt condolences to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, her children and grandchildren, and the people of Thailand” in a statement from the White House.

Obama said the king was a “close friend of the United States and a valued partner of many US Presidents”.
He added he had the honour to meet the king during his visit to Thailand in 2012 and recalled the monarch’s deep affection and compassion for the Thai people from his visit.
“The American people and I stand with the people of Thailand as we mourn His Majesty the King’s passing, and today we hold the Thai people in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.
