Asean Championship match switched to Muang Thong's SCG
The Football Association of Thailand has switched venues for the final round of Asean Football Championship group-stage fixtures next month.
The eight-nation tournament is being co-hosted by Thailand and Malaysia from November 24 to December 23. Three-time champions, Thailand, whose last victory in the biennial competition came in 2002, are in Group A along with Vietnam, Myanmar and the Philippines, while Group B comprises title holders Malaysia, Laos, Singapore and Indonesia.
The final group stage fixtures will be played on November 30, with Myanmar v Philippines switching from the now unavailable Supachalasai stadium to Thai Premier League team Muang Thong United’s SCG stadium. Thailand v Vietnam will take place the same day at Rajmangala National stadium.
If the Thai team reaches the semi-finals and the final, they will also need to play at the SCG, as the Rajamangala is hosting the Race of Champions motor-racing event in December.
Ong-art Kohsinkha, the FAT secretary general, revealed the Asean Football Federation had already granted approval for the switch.
“They understood the situation and gave us a green light to change the venue, given that the SCG stadium meets international standards. There’s no doubt it is good enough to host internationals. I believe fans will turn up at the stadium in their droves,” said Ong-art.
