Firstly, the country’s central region is located on the land that resembles a large concave pan – capable of capturing rainwater for a few months each year before it flows down to the Gulf of Thailand – resulting in the land becoming richly fertile and making the country the world’s No 1 rice exporter. Hence its nickname of the “Golden Land”.
Secondly, Thai people regard filial piety – having respect for one’s parents, elders and ancestors – to be among the highest virtues. Thais call His Majesty the late King Bhumibol “Phor Luang”, or Royal Father.
Lastly, we Thais rarely argue among ourselves about what our late King’s philosophy – “Sufficiency Economy” – truly means. We simply follow His Majesty’s sage advice and practise it.
In our own humble opinion, the true concept of Sufficiency Economy is not only to work smartly, but also to spend wisely.
