The easy way to trace the origins of Prawit’s watches

The easy way to trace the origins of Prawit’s watches

Re: “Prawit ‘close to resigning’ amid scandal”, The Nation, January 22.

It should be easy for the Anti-Corruption Commission to trace through the Customs Dept and Revenue Dept whether the rarer items were imported legally with import duty and VAT paid on them and by whom. There can’t be that many coming into the country, certainly not with tax paid. Tax records would show who imported them and if it was a bona fide watch retailer, while their records would show who bought them. Items that were hand-carried from overseas and properly declared to Thai customs would show who brought them in and paid the tax on them.
If there are no tax records, then Prawit should explain to the public why he was happy to borrow and wear smuggled luxury watches.

Where in this article is there any indication that Prawit is even contemplating resignation?
I see people saying he should resign, but no reports from him or anyone close to him saying that he has contemplated the action.

Doesn’t matter yet: the investigation isn’t over.

Oh, yes. “The investigation.”
But it does matter. He should have come out from day one with assurances. He also should have said he’d borrowed many other watches. But being so arrogant, he thought he could just swat his hand and it would all be over: no one would dare question him further. Now he has 25 watches to account for (and we’ll probably see more in the future).
If it were me, and I backed a coup in my country, saying one of the big reasons was because of corruption, well, I wouldn’t be wearing expensive watches in any capacity. And even if I genuinely did borrow all 25 (hard to say that with a straight face) I’d resign in embarrassment for being so stupid. How could I have been so stupid to be going around in public with such expensive watches. How utterly vulgar and crass. I’ve been a fool and I deserve the wrath of the public.
