Lack of accountability is the problem

MONDAY, JUNE 11, 2018

Thanks for your great editorial on June 10.  National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha recently defended the government’s huge budget request by claiming that “corruption is not about the system. It all depends on the people.”

Even for a man who says misleading things all the time, this is really surprising. The reality is the NCPO has designed a system where they are not, and cannot ever, be held legally accountable for anything they have done..
It is precisely the NCPO’s exploitation of a system of non-accountability that is the problem. And with a Bt3 trillion budget being queued up for disbursement in the lead-up to a national election, it looks like the military buffet government is moving into full gear.
